Reading Jeremiah 24
I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.Jeremiah 24:7
Again today we have a verse that has a recognisable echo of a promise made to Abraham (Genesis 17: 8) “… I will be their God”. The covenant of old had a sense of promise to all the children of Abraham but as the kingdom fell away, and Judah heads towards a time of exile, the relationship between God and the children is not seeing the people as one corporate mass. God seems to more clearly offer blessing to those who live his way, and a judgement to those who have known the word but gone their own way. There were those who were good fruit, full of flavour but some inedible. Those who have chosen God as their God will now have an enhanced relationship. If we spend time with God and seek God’s path we too will see that relationship strengthen and grow. If we have had opportunity to be the people, but rejected it then, as in Matthew 25, we will not be recognised (Parable of Wise & Foolish Virgins), or find ourselves judged and put among the goats rather than the sheep of the flock.
May we pray that we are truthful to the way of the Lord, and reflect Christ Jesus in our lives.
