Reading 1Samuel 2: 1-10
He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and makes them inherit a throne of honour. ‘For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; on them he has set the world1 Samual 2:8
The lectionary marks today as not simply Lent, or even Passiontide (the last 2 weeks of Lent) but as the Annunciation to Mary, it is 9 months until Christmas.
Unlike Mary, who was young, and whose pregnancy was quite unexpected our passage has Hannah, who had spent many years longing for a child. Finally blessed with the birth of Samuel she has brought him to Eli for a life of Godly service, and offers him with this prayer, effectively a psalm. I wonder how we arrange our lives, that the most costly and treasured element of our being is dedicated to the Lord, that the kingdom may grow.
Why not pray today that the Spirit may guide each one of us, to live our lives as an offering to God
