Reading Jeremiah 22: 20 – 23: 8
‘I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number.’Jeremiah 23:3
The Lord speaking through the prophet has been giving a message of woe, that exile is coming and that not only the king but his descendants will no longer be on the throne. The “signet ring”, the person who was king, no longer reflects the identity of God, and is no longer a great possession, and is now cast aside, and yet…..
God continues to honour the descendants of Jesse. A son of David will become King, and the people will be brought back from exile (they’ve not even gone there yet). There will be fruitfulness, and an increase in number – let’s remember that idea of filling the earth goes back well before David, before Moses (Deut 7: 13) even before Abraham (Gen 17: 2). It was an instruction to Noah (Gen 9: 7) and before that in the Garden of Eden (Gen 1: 28). God’s plans are of old, they take turns, but He is unchanging, wanting his people to grow and be fruitful.
So what of us, well fruitfulness doesn’t necessarily relate to fertility, and increasing in numbers doesn’t necessarily relate to women giving birth. If we are people who grow the fruit of the spirit (Galatians 5: 22-23) then that is a growth of the kingdom and in doing so we will demonstrate God’s ways encouraging a return to good pasture of those who have gone astray.
Let us pray that we may be fruitful in all we do, that the kingdom may grow.
